Urban Park Rehberge

Empty benches in the cold of difficult times, January 2021
An urban winter landscape in Berlin, leafless trees, wooden skeletons, hibernating silhouettes of life. But vivid dynamic colors, a mosaik of shiny shades of red, orange and green, even in winter.

An impressive and diverse landscape area, and that in midst of the center of Berlin. Located in the North-West of the German capital, park Rehberge is based on a land cape relief, being created by the last ice age. The area originally consisted of drifting sand dunes and a glacial channel, called "langer Fenn" .

The park structure of today was built up between 1926 and 1929 based on plans of Rudolf Germer (1884 - 1938) and Erwin Barth (1880 - 1933). Their plans were developed out of original ideas by landscape architect Albert Brodersen (1857 - 1930).

Concept of the new park area, opened in 1929, was the formation of a recreational facility for the working class of Berlin. Unlike typical park architectures in the beginning of the 20th century, the creators of Rehberge waived symmetrical arrangements and instead left the natural geography more or less as it was and complemented it with sunbathing meadows, a toboggan run and different sports grounds. Despite some misuse of the area in times of the national socialism Rehberge survived even those dark times largely uneffected.

After the Second World War the sport areas were completed with a tennis court. In 1954, all sport facilities were modernised. And since 1953, some parts of urban park Rehberge were declared as landscape protection areas.
